What to do in Tenerife in April – My top picks

  1. Visit Mount Teide National Park
  2. Explore Santa Cruz de Tenerife
  3. Explore Puerto de la Cruz
  4. Go whale watching
  5. Go on a submarine dive

1. April weather in Tenerife

Tenerife’s weather is mild in April, with daytime highs typically reaching 22 degrees Celsius and nighttime lows at 16 degrees Celsius.

You may have read that this month is still part of the island’s “winter season.”

But based on experience, there’s nothing too wintery about the temperature of Tenerife during April.

Since April is only one step away from summer in Tenerife, I could still travel through the island this month wearing my typical “tropical outfits.”

Of course, though, there were moments when I needed to wear extra layers, like when the day was more humid than usual. So, don’t forget to pack a light sweater just in case.

Overall, the relatively cool weather in April makes it perfect for outdoor activities on the island, such as hiking breathtaking peaks filled with colorful blooms and enjoying the non-ending Tenerife live performances and cultural events.

Fun fact: Tenerife is well known as Isla de la Eterna Primavera or the Island of Eternal Spring, so even if you hop over the island during winter, the weather will consistently stay within 18 to 30 degrees Celsius during the day.

2. Explore the outdoors

Amazing things to do in South Tenerife, view from a hilltop of valley with areas of houses and grassy fields surrounded by tall green hills with mountains in the distance

Tenerife’s “eternal spring” weather allows plants to bloom throughout this island all year round.

But after living in this botanical paradise for almost a year, it was very clear that only March, April, and May truly bring the floral beauty of this enchanting island to life.

I still remember that when I visited the renowned national park of Mount Teide, I almost blew up my SD storage, taking hundreds of images of its eye-catching wildflowers.

Seeing colorful blooms sprouting in the middle of a unique volcanic landscape was honestly just so majestical. It’s a must-see scenery for every traveler.

If Mount Teide is too demanding of a hike, you can always take a quicker, more leisurely stroll through the Teno Mountains instead.

There, you’ll also find dozens of floral species that bring a healthy splash of colors contrasting the greeneries of the mountains.

Whatever you choose, exploring the outdoors is undoubtedly a must on your list of what to do in Tenerife in April!

3. Beach Retreats

Playa el Duque

My always-not-mentioned answer to anyone wondering what to do in Tenerife in April is to indulge in beach retreats.

Can you swim in Tenerife in April? Absolutely!

However, it can be challenging for many travelers to swim during this time of the year, as the sea temperature usually stays at 20 degrees Celsius.

But if you’re like me, who’s always up for a chilly, splashy adventure, Tenerife has tons of popular places, considering that the island’s shoreline stretches for 212 miles.

Suppose you’re exploring the southern area of the island. In that case, I highly recommend dropping by Playa del Durque for a relaxed beach atmosphere or El Medano Beach to experience unforgettable surfing sessions.

Of course, beach retreats are also some of the best things to do in North Tenerife

Just like the south, the north side is also home to some of the best beaches in Tenerife, with my favorites being the picturesque Playa de las Teresitas and Playa de Antequera, which are home to breathtaking sunsets.

4. Hiking and Outdoor Adventures

Amazing Hikes in Tenerife, view of sun drenched mountain through canyon with path leading through the canyon

Did you even visit the island if you didn’t experience the exhilarating hikes in Tenerife

Because almost every single person I talked to while living on this island made it clear that Tenerife equals outdoor adventures.

I’ve taken a dozen memorable hikes in Tenerife. And my top favorite as an adrenaline junkie is, unsurprisingly, my hikes in Mount Teide that involved climbing, cycling, and riding cable cars.

The best part? April’s weather is as refreshing as a hiker can ever wish for, so I barely sweat despite the endless movement on this island!

When it comes to enjoyment, my Mount Teide trips are closely followed by my excursions to the Anaga region, which put me at the center of nature.

There, you’ll find forests and ravines so pristine that they look almost untouched by urban development.

5. Cultural Exploration

visiting Tenerife in October, View of street with a row of single-level buildings on one side and a row of small green palm trees on the other with a large bell tower visible at the end under a blue sky with clouds

Nothing builds memorable memories in Tenerife like exposing yourself to the culture and traditions of this island.

Luckily, this was the most straightforward activity, as landmarks, local art, and museums are literally everywhere on the island!

Apart from visiting the natural landmarks I’ve mentioned throughout this post, try to see these popular places in Tenerife to explore the culture of the island truly:

  • Santa Cruz Opera: An opera house filled with concerts, musicals, dance performances, and operas.
  • La Casa de los Balcones: A long strip of old manor houses with balconies dating back to 1632. I highly recommend checking out the handmade crafts made by the locals in this area.
  • Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) cultural center: A modern museum for local Tenerife artists featuring thousands of works.

6. Festivals and Events

Staying in Tenerife quickly made me realize that this island is serious about holding festivals and events.

There are concerts every day in both the north and south parts, and if you travel to Tenerife during Easter, you’ll experience an even more significant cultural immersion.

As a Spanish island, Tenerife holds very religiously centered Easter celebrations.

During Semana Santa, you can find palm leaves everywhere, join gorgeous processions, and experience how locals embody the spirit of Holy Week!

If you’re wondering what to do in Tenerife in April, this should be on your list!

Easter in Tenerife is very different from hunting eggs in your backyard, making it a memorable experience for most travelers I’ve met on the island!

Pro tip: If you want to experience the renowned “Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife,” the second most popular carnival worldwide, consider visiting Tenerife in February or March.

7. Culinary Delights

Looking for unforgettable things to do in Costa Adeje or any other town in Tenerife?

Exploring culinary delights is the way to go.

The cuisine here is a bit more “adventurous” than what you can expect from traditional hotel buffets.

So, don’t think about leaving the island without trying conventional Canarian delights such as goat meat in a special garlic sauce, grilled goat cheese, and rabbit stew.

Of course, you can also find familiar-tasting dishes like wrinkled potatoes and freshly grilled fish.

Want the best culinary experience in Tenerife?

Like I did, make sure to allot time to explore culinary events on the island.

Apart from classic winery tours, you can join night shows that let you enjoy banquets while watching medieval fighting or flamenco dancing.

8. Whale Watching

Whale Watching in Tenerife

When I visited other tourist paradises, like the Azores, the whale-watching season only lasted several months a year.

But luckily, in Tenerife, you can enjoy the fascinating experience of watching whales dance gracefully in their oceanic ballet all year round, including April!

If you’re wondering what to do in Tenerife in April, worry not! One of the best places in Tenerife to witness the wonders of whales is in Costa Adeje.

Finding guided and private whale-watching tours was effortless when I was in the area, but I eventually chose a tour from the Whale Watch Tenerife company.

This exciting yet serene activity is also one of the coolest things to do in Los Gigantes, Tenerife, whose marina is the starting point for many whale-watching tours.

9. Stargazing

I’m not going to lie—most of the answers to the question “What to do in Tenerife in April” is during its 13 hours of daylight.

However, the sky truly becomes the main character on this island after the sun sets, with stars filling every inch of the sky like diamonds.

I know there’s no one-size-fits-all formula for stargazing on this nature-rich island.

But based on experience, Mount Teide is the best place to go in Tenerife to witness the wonders of stars, constellations, and galaxies!

As the highest peak in Spain, this majestic mountain not only sets the perfect tone for soaking yourself in nature but also has the least light pollution in Tenerife, giving you the best stargazing experience possible.

Not into hiking up mountains to stargaze?

If that’s the case, you can always visit observatories like Observatorio del Teide, where you can level up your astronomical experience using high-quality telescopes.

For my friend whose vision wasn’t exactly the best, observatories were a lifesaver for stargazing!

10. Golfing in Tenerife

What’s a better way to play golf than in a place where you can enjoy breathtaking views and feel the ocean’s gentle breeze?

I am happy to say that this experience is precisely one of the highlights of my stay in Tenerife.

When considering what to do in Tenerife in April, you should consider this activity.

Just at the top of my head, I can name 2 must-visit golfing courses on the island:

  • Abama Golf: A championship golf course with 18 holes. The best way to access this is by staying at the Ritz-Carlton Tenerife Hotel.
  • Buenavista Golf: A golf course adjacent to the ocean. This was one of my favorite spots to enjoy sunsets on the island.

Not a seasoned golfer?

Don’t worry. You’ll have the chance to say that you learned golf at some of the best golf courses in the world!

11. Wellness and Relaxation

If you travel as much as I do, you’d know very well that outdoor adventures can take a toll on your body.

However, once you’re in Tenerife, you can go absolutely crazy about the activities you try because you’ll find plentiful opportunities to rejuvenate and relax.

If you’re wondering what to do in Tenerife in April, the island offers hundreds of options, from relaxing spas and soothing massage therapists to yoga sessions.

This is exactly one of the main reasons I entered Tenerife as a tourist but ended up renting an apartment monthly!

For a luxurious spa experience, I highly recommend visiting Spa Vitanova, which has alternating cold and hot hydro massage sessions.

If you want to rejuvenate while enjoying resort amenities, though, Sparadise at Paradise Park is the way to go! It’s open to solo travelers, couples, and even families with kids!

12. Shopping

Traveling and shopping always go hand-in-hand for me, and after visiting countless countries, I have to say Tenerife doesn’t disappoint the shopping department.

A quick drive to the southern part of the island will give you both traditional and modern shopping malls within your reach.

If you want a classic shopping-inside-the-mall experience, don’t forget to shop in the SIAM Mall, a popular tourist spot in Adeje, or Centro Comercial Plaza del Duque, another shopping center with avant-garde architecture in the area.

However, for a more Canary-like shopping adventure, consider buying from local vendors selling on beachfront, popular streets, and pretty much everywhere!

Not only can you buy more unique products from locals, but you can also try haggling to save money, which is a fun thing you can add to your list of what to do in Tenerife in April!

13. Day Trips

best places to go in north tenerife, colorful buildings of la laguna

The most straightforward answer to the question “What to do in Tenerife in April?” is to take day trips and explore attractions near your accommodation.

You don’t need a set of itineraries to enjoy this activity, as almost every corner of Tenerife offers exciting and easily accessible excursions to tourists.

When I spontaneously went on day trips in Tenerife myself, I enjoyed going on daylight wine tours, visiting picturesque towns like La Laguna, and taking an unplanned trip to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital.

I agree that it’s much easier to get the most out of your Tenerife trip if you plan well, but sometimes, you just have to let the day flow and see where it leads you!

14. Photography Tours

Discover your favourite Tenerife things to do, garden area with green trees and shrubs with pathway leading down the middle

In Tenerife, photography became one of my go-to things to do in Puerto de la Cruz, where nature was present in almost every location I visited.

However, of course, there were many other photography hotspots in Tenerife.

So, if you’re still unsure of what to do in Tenerife in April, get your camera ready and start taking amazing photos!

Among thousands of IG-worthy spots I discovered in Tenerife, my top nature-focused photography paradise were The Enchanted Forest of Anaga, The Drago Milenario tree, and El Médano.

Each was so surreal that taking a bad photo of these locations was almost impossible.

Conversely, if you want to feature manmade wonders in your shots, remember to visit the Punta Teno Lighthouse and the Princess Inspire Tenerife

15. Local Entertainment

This list on what to do in Tenerife in April wouldn’t be complete without me mentioning the top nightclubs in Tenerife and the best spots to enjoy live music, performances, and cultural shows.

Tenerife is a local entertainment hub; I’ve visited a club on this island more times than I’d like to admit.

If you want an excellent nightclub overall, Achaman Discopub is the best option.

It’s open seven days a week and brimming with locals, not just tourists, which has allowed me to find friends on the island in no time.

Now, if you want to explore music, not just drinks, the Magic Lounge Club is another unforgettable venue.

If the club hasn’t changed since I left, you can dance to your heart’s content and take cocktail-making classes.

16. Family-Friendly Activities

Worrying about what to do in Tenerife in April as a family?

Luckily, as a super family-friendly destination, there are many things to do in Tenerife with kids.

Apart from the kid-friendly activities I’ve mentioned already, such as whale watching, visiting beaches, and trying out water sports, you can also try visiting zoos, diving excursions in submarines, and exploring parks on the island.

I recommend contacting guided tours if you want to explore as a family to get the most interactive experience for you and your little ones.

Not only will the help of professional tour guides make the trip less stressful, but it’ll also be a fun learning experience for kids in that curious-about-everything age range!

My final thoughts on Tenerife in April

north tenerife beach, person walking along beach in north tenerife next to mountains and small waves

Tenerife is a destination you can enjoy all year round, but as this post has proven, April is one of the best months to explore the island.

The tourist crowd is not too crazy this month, and with the heat being very manageable during this time of the year, there’s no better time to explore the outdoors and indulge in various activities such as watersports, hiking, beach retreats, and day trips.

I’m sure that just like me, you’ll find a home away from home in Tenerife, where nature meets a subtle touch of modern architecture.

Remember, you can always revisit this guide when needed, so you won’t have to worry about what to do in Tenerife in April again!
