1. Door County – Cozy Cabin Escapes
Our top choice for midwest getaways in winter will always be Door County.
This county transforms into a picturesque landscape when snow falls, becoming a winter wonderland!
This is especially true if you stay in log cabins and rustic cottages in the middle of the woods, where the snow is often left untouched.
However, the cabins are just one reason why Door County is one of the best destinations for couples in Wisconsin for winter getaways.
Door County is dotted with quaint towns like Ephraim and Egg Harbor, offering charming local shops, wineries, cafes, and restaurants.
So, visiting them is perfect for a relaxing and romantic date with your partner!
Want more of a thrilling experience?
Well, you can always try winter sports like sleigh rides and snowshoeing.
I stayed at The Green Apple Lodge, tucked away in the woods near Green Bay. I loved the location, which was near snowmobile trails, the ample space, and the cozy hot tub.
There are always plenty of things to do in Door County in winter. Hence, any type of couple, laid-back soulmates or those seeking adventures, can enjoy their perfect here!
2. Sundara Inn & Spa – Wisconsin Dells
When most people think of Wisconsin Dells, they often imagine very busy and loud indoor waterparks filled with kids and families.
But guess what—the Dells can also offer relaxing and serene moments for couples.
All thanks to destinations like the Sundara Inn & Spa.
This retreat is like a peaceful oasis, away from the noise of the city and people.
I was totally in awe of the spa’s heated outdoor pools.
Who knew it was possible to comfortably soak in warm water outdoors, surrounded by snow-covered trees in a tranquil forest?
Also, I very much appreciated their couple spa services, which really relieved our fatigue when we spent hours skiing in Wisconsin Dells.
Returning to this inn after exploring all the outdoor things to do in Wisconsin Dells in winter always felt like a big, warm hug. So, we’ll 100% be visiting this inn again.
3. Lake Geneva – Lakeside Luxury
Lake Geneva is popular in the summer, but guess what—it’s also one of the best romantic winter getaways in Wisconsin.
When the lake is frozen and the lakeside boardwalk is covered with snow, this destination becomes a romantic, storybook-like place, perfect for couples who want to enjoy quality time together!
Not to mention there are many timeworthy tours like this 3-hour chocolate tasting tour that make Lake Geneva even more suitable for getaways!
We stayed at the Abbey Resort and the Geneva National Resort when we visited the city for one winter week.
Since both offer lakeside views, even just stepping outside in the morning felt like a paid tourism activity. It’s that good!
Apart from the fantastic lakeside sceneries offered by these two resorts, they also made Lake Geneva winter activities accessible!
From winter hiking, ice skating, sledding, and zip-lining, there are tons of adrenaline-pumping things to do in Lake Geneva in winter!
Do you prefer relaxing activities when enjoying Wisconsin winter getaways for couples?
Then, try ice fishing or join the Winterfest in February, enjoying its annual sculpture competition instead.
Lake Geneva is one of the best Wisconsin winter weekend getaways for couples, so make sure to drop by!
4. The American Club – Kohler
If money’s no object and you just wanna have the best experience you can enjoy as a couple, maybe for a honeymoon or just a special occasion, consider The American Club as your best option.
As one of the most luxurious winter resorts in Wisconsin, this destination never disappoints.
From the luxurious, historic decor to the services to the amenities, everything is as 5-star as it can get!
Right when we arrived at the American Club, we were greeted by a fantastic host.
When we mentioned celebrating our anniversary, he upgraded our room for free and even left a personal note with a complimentary bottle of wine!
I’m sure that doesn’t always happen, but this shows how the hotel’s dedicated staff goes above and beyond for customers.
Apart from the gorgeous rooms and top-tier service, the hotel’s more notable features include an indoor golfing area and a rooftop lounge with a very warm fireplace.
There were also fantastic spa facilities, ranging from steam rooms, saunas, and regular pools.
Staying at the Kohler is undoubtedly one of the most romantic couple getaways in Wisconsin you can ever experience.
If it weren’t so expensive, we would have stayed here for the entire time we were in the area.
5. Bayfield – Charming Winter Wonderland
Love pretty sceneries and picture-perfect views?
You better spend at least a night in Bayfield, one of the most charming towns in Wisconsin.
This is truly perfect for couples who like spending their day exploring outside their Bayfield accommodations.
For places to stay, I recommend Pinehurst Inn Bed & Breakfast near Mount Ashwabay Ski and Recreation Area or this secluded hideaway with a private dock by Lake Superior.
We had a fantastic time just walking through the picturesque town of Bayfield, chatting with locals, and dining at local restaurants.
Are there also adventurous winter activities available? Of course! Bayfield offers dog sledding adventures and even the opportunity to visit ice caves.
If you want more excitement, you can also catch a ferry to Madeline Island, one of the best places to explore, relax, and enjoy nature.
Whether you want to sightsee or explore together, Bayfield is one of the best Wisconsin winter getaways for couples.
6. The Osthoff Resort – Elkhart Lake
Last time we spent Christmas in Wisconsin, we spent a couple of days at The Osthoff Resort, located on the picturesque Elkhart Lake.
Right when we arrived at the resort, we were immediately captivated by the winter beauty of the resort.
Its white exterior beautifully blended with the fluffy snow on the ground, and at night, the trees outside were adorned with lights.
Inside the resort, we spent most of our time in the game room and the bar just overlooking the lake. The staff was totally unique, and the food and drinks were great!
Since the town was just a short walk away, we frequented local establishments.
We loved hitting Off the Rails for brunch and the Quit Qui Oc golf course for a snowshoeing adventure.
Of course, though, the highlight of our stay at the Osthoff Resort was visiting one of the biggest Christmas Markets in Wisconsin!
The rooms included complimentary tickets to this event, which was a great bonus.
I highly recommend staying at The Osthoff Resort for winter getaways in Wisconsin!

7. Apostle Islands – Off-the-Grid Adventure
Apostle Islands is your destination if you and your partner enjoy off-the-grid and private romantic getaways Wisconsin.
Among all the beautiful spots, this location easily offers the most unique experience.
Instead of being surrounded by cute cafes, quaint towns, and busy streets, the Apostle Islands offer the chance to cross the frozen lake to visit breathtaking frozen sea caves (if the ice conditions permit).
You can also hike, snowshoe, and cross-country ski when there’s a good snow cover in the surrounding area (usually around January and February). With a license, you and your partner can also try ice fishing!
We wanted to experience winter camping in Wisconsin, so we booked reservations before arriving.
But if you want a more comfortable, cozy stay, you’ll also find several accommodation options near the islands. Spirit Lodge in La Pointe and this island cabin are some of the best places to stay.
Apostle Islands is one of the best Wisconsin getaways for adults who want to reconnect with nature and escape the city’s hustle and bustle.
8. White Gull Inn – Fish Creek
For couples who take pride in being serious foodies, let me introduce the White Gull Inn—a bed and breakfast legend mostly popular for its food!
This inn has won countless awards since 1896, including Good Morning America’s Best Breakfast Challenge.
So, yup, if you love food, this is where you can enjoy one of the best romantic getaways in Wisconsin.
Every meal there was a delight, but if I were to pick one thing you must try at least once, it’s the traditional Door County fish boils.
It’s not just dinner—an entire fire-blazing performance where the flames reach sky-high as the chef cooks your meal!
Apart from the food, though, the accommodation factor of this inn was also amazing.
White Gull Inn’s rooms are very vintage-chic, with patterned wallpapers and original antiques. The room we stayed in also had a whirlpool bath and fireplace, so our stay was cozy and romantic!
White Gull Inn is really one of the best places to go in Wisconsin in the winter. From here, you can easily explore the town of Fish Creek on your own or through segway tours.
9. Canoe Bay – Chetek
In the secluded Northwoods of Chetek lies Canoe Bay, one of the best winter cabins in Wisconsin.
If you’re an architecture fanatic, this retreat feels very Frank Lloyd Wright-esque.
It is a cabin beautifully composed of natural wood and glass, allowing you to experience the tranquility of nature as you rest inside your room.
The service and food here were also top-notch, fitting for a place that hosts one of the best Wisconsin winter getaways for couples.
Breakfasts are delivered straight to your door, and for the other meals, you can dine in your room or enjoy the cozy on-site restaurant.
The wine selection is also great, and the library is a haven for book enthusiasts like me.
It’s the place that won’t make you feel guilty even if you laze around the cabin for the entire duration of your stay!
Canoe Bay is one of the best, most relaxing winter retreats in Wisconsin!
10. Washington Island – Peaceful Island Retreat
Washington Island is a quiet, romantic town in Door County that you can reach by ferry.
It’s not really a renowned place for winter vacations in Wisconsin, but they have great accommodations on Washington Island.
But we spent a night at the Great Sunrise Cottage during winter years back, and the entire place just felt like a charming countryside town from a book.
Finding few tourists as we explored the island felt like our own private winter wonderland!
We loved visiting the neighborhood coffee shops, restaurants, and galleries. It was also incredibly relaxing to just chill on the snowy shore of the island!
If you want to enjoy off-the-beaten-path Wisconsin winter getaways for couples that are less extreme than the Apostle Islands, Washington Island will welcome you with open arms.
11. Justin Trails Resort – Sparta
If you’d like an in-the-woods retreat with your partner, surrounded by foliage on a hilly ridge, the Justin Trails Resort will be one of the best places to visit in Midwest in winter.
Staying at this resort felt very healing and relaxing, as all you could see as your eyes wandered were snow-covered landscapes of nature.
Got a furry friend with you? Even better!
This resort is one of Wisconsin’s few pet-friendly accommodations, and it welcomes furry friends with as much enthusiasm as the guests themselves!
While we stayed at Justin Trails, we loved exploring nearby areas, including several iconic bridges we explored on foot and the historic homes in the city.
This resort is also near some of the best Christmas tree farms in Wisconsin, so if you live nearby, you can cut a tree down to bring home for the holidays!
12. Whispering Pine Lodge – Phelps
For the last entry on this list of the best Wisconsin winter getaways for couples, let me introduce the Whispering Pine Lodge.
This lodge is also located in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. So, expect a postcard-perfect snow-covered landscape while you stay in rustic log cabins.
Since you’ll be surrounded by nature, there are also plenty of opportunities to snowshoe and ride snowmobiles.
Down at the lakeshore, you may also fish or boat (weather permitting)!
We never ran out of things to do in winter in Wisconsin when we stayed at this lodge. I’ll be more than happy to stay again, but I might try doing so over the summer next time for a change!
