1. Echternach

First off, get whisked to Echternach, the oldest town in Luxembourg.

Situated along the banks of River Sure, Echternach forms a border between Luxembourg and Germany.

Growing up in this quiet old town, I was exposed to its charming cultural heritage and multilingual atmosphere.

Every Whit Tuesday, the ancient abbey town’s Dancing Procession happens, one of the unique things to do in Echternach

The echternacher Sprangprëssessioun (The Echternach Dancing Procession) celebrates Saint Willibrord, the founder of Echternach’s Benedictine abbey in 698.

Pilgrims wearing black, blue, or white dresses parade through the streets in small hopping movements, one step to the left and one step to the right. Everyone can participate!

Visit the Museum of the Abbey Echternach to gain more insight into Saint Willibrord’s life and work. It is home to gospel books and manuscripts that survived many wars, including the French Revolution.

2. Vianden Castle

Experience day trips from Luxembourg back to the bygone era at Vianden Castle, one of Luxembourg’s most iconic and well-preserved castles.

Perched atop the cliff, it looks carved out of a fairytale. Exploring Vianden Castle will make you realize why it’s one of the top attractions in Luxembourg.

Constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries, Vianden Castle’s Romanesque and Gothic charm is still preserved today.

Influential counts such as Henry I of Vianden and his wife Margaret of Courtenay used to reside in the castle.

It’s considered one of the stunning attractions in Luxembourg and was also listed by CNN as one of the most beautiful castles in the world.

3. Mullerthal Trail

The Mullerthal region is one of my favorite places in Luxembourg! A must-see is the tri-part waterfall, Schiessentümpel, one of the best nature places in Luxembourg.

Green hills and breathtaking rock formations surround the Mullerthal Trail, which continues to draw hikers and nature lovers like me. Hiking is one of the best things to do in Mullerthal.

The Mullerthal Trail is spread over 70 miles, overlooking the Sauer River and going through the country’s East. The routes start from Echternach through Wollefsschlucht Canyon, Berdorf village, and the Schnellert forest until Mullerthal village.

I found another unmissable highlight of the Mullerthal Trail in the region’s heart: the Heringer Millen, a 17th-century mill with an ancient stone oven used to make traditional bread.

After a long day of exploring the region, I recommend booking a hotel in Echternach since it’s only 14 minutes away from Mullerthal Trail. Otherwise camping in Berdorf is a fabulous experience too!

4. Luxembourg City Old Town

The old town is beyond beautiful, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

With ancient quarters and fortifications spread across the cobblestoned streets, Luxembourg City’s old town is incredibly steeped in history, making it ideal for a scenic walking tour.

As one of Europe’s greatest fortified sites, Luxembourg is home to historical landmarks, including Bock Casemates, the Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the Grand Ducal Palace.

A day exploring the old town won’t be enough to visit its iconic landmarks, so I suggest you look for where to stay in Luxembourg

You’ll be spoilt for choice from budget hotels to luxury accommodations here.

Just a stone’s throw away from the Notre Dame Cathedral, Hotel Le Place d’Armes is the perfect spot to stay, with easy access to the Christmas Markets in Luxembourg in winter.

5. Moselle

Past the charming old town, go nature-tripping across the Moselle River that flows through Germany and France.

This picturesque wine-growing side of Luxembourg is beautifully laid out with rolling vineyards and fruit-laden orchards atop sun-drenched slopes.

More than its flattering views, the Moselle region produces some of Europe’s renowned wines from famous grape varieties like Pinot and Elbling.

Yet, perhaps, the best way to explore Moselle is by bicycle, where I pedaled along the Velo Vinum cycling trail as I admire the region’s beautiful vineyards.

Make the most of Moselle by sampling wines on these trails through a guided wine-tasting tour.

6. Esch-sur-Sûre

Amid Saure River valley lies Esch-sur-Sûre, a charming village in the heart of the Ardennes, northern Luxembourg.

Esch-sur-Sûre is at the foot of an old castle overlooking the river and surrounding forests.

During summer, locals and tourists flock to Upper-Sûre Lake, an ideal spot for surfing, swimming, canoeing, diving, and windsurfing.

The rustic charm of the village remains until today, with its narrow streets still intact from the Middle Ages.

From the circular walk trail, I passed some old stone walls, castles, and a scenic path connected to the woods.

Unlike the old town, Esch-sur-Sûre is a bit more secluded in a rural setting where one can find peace and tranquility.

7. Larochette Castle

Ruins in Larochette Castle in spring in Luxembourg

Perched atop a rocky promontory overlooking an old village, Larochette Castle is constructed with dressed stone within a rampart now in ruins.

At the other end of Larochette Castle lies the remaining structure of the old mansion with sandstones surrounded by a now-destroyed wall.

Throughout the 12th to 14th centuries, Larochette Castle served as the residence of grand families from the lords of Larochette to Frederic and Conrad, lords of Homburg.

By the end of the 16th century, the castle was burned down and never restored.

Recent archeological excavations found opulent origins of the lords of Larochette dating back to the 13th century.

Larochette Castle also overlooks the panoramic views of the surrounding Müllerthal region.

8. Schengen

This quaint village is situated on the border of Luxembourg, Germany, and France. It is known for its unique link to the European Union and … the Schengen Visa!

In June 1985, this historic Luxembourg village hosted the signing of the Schengen agreement, which created a borderless zone in Europe and allowed the free movement of people and goods.

To commemorate the signing of the treaty, a visit to the European Museum Schengen is one of the famous things in Luxembourg, and it attracts thousands of tourists, even from China and Australia!

Surrounding the historic village are scenic riverfront promenades and picturesque vineyards, including the 100-year-old wine estate Domaine Thill Château de Schengen.

9. Beaufort Castle

In the heart of the Müllerthal region, Beaufort Castle is a beauty basking in its medieval glory.

The medieval fortress, dating back to the 11th century, towers over the idyllic little lake—one of the coolest places in Luxembourg.

Beaufort Castle opened in 1932 as a valuable monument in the beautiful countryside.

To appreciate more of its surroundings, I suggest taking a nearby hiking trail that starts at Beaufort Castle along the scenic Ale Wéier pond through the tipi village of Camping Plage.

Then, you can continue along the Alebuerg, Maison Berens until the castle’s old wash fountain.

There are numerous hiking trails close by.

10. Bourscheid Castle

View in Bourscheid Castle on a sunny summer day

Of all the castles I’ve visited in Luxembourg, one of my favorites is the Bourscheid Castle.

Built in the 10th century, Bourscheid Castle stands majestically over the Sauer Valley on top of a steep promontory.

At night, the castle magically illuminates like a whimsical wonderland.

Just a few steps from the palace, there’s a 13th-century Gothic manor house, one of the best places in Luxembourg.

Can’t get enough of Bourscheid Castle? Then, stay at Cocoon Hotel La Rive along the banks of Sauer River, which offers magnificent views of Bourscheid Castle.

The best places in Luxembourg City are found within the scenic routes, hiking trails, and picturesque vineyards.
