15 Things to Do in Albufeira in March

This might be an unpopular opinion, but March is one of the best months to travel Algarve, especially to Albufeira, one of its tourism gems.

I know this month’s “off-season” label can be slightly off-putting.

When I stayed in Albufeira in March for three weeks, the daytime weather was honestly perfect for outdoor adventures like hiking, exploring, and watersports, while the nighttime breezes offered the best temperature to enjoy nightlife activities.

There were countless memorable experiences in this city.

But I decided to narrow down the best things to do in Albufeira in March to make it extra easy for you to enjoy this paradise-on-earth to its total capacity.

Pack your bags and book your tickets, as you’ll be on one heck of an adventure if you follow my recommendations on this list!

Best things to do in Albufeira in March

  1. Explore the Old Town
  2. Go on a diving tour
  3. Go cruising
  4. Enjoy a food tour

    1. Relax at Praia da Oura

Wooden walkway down to Praia da Oura in Albufeira

If I had to choose my favorite out of all beaches in Algarve, it would be Praia da Oura.

On top of being a crazy party beach, Praia da Oura is renowned for its serene water quality, golden sand, subtle waves, and spectacular panoramic view.

Due to its insane popularity, walking along this beach is usually more or less impossible without bumping into someone.

But if you choose to be savvy like me and visit Portugal in March, you can have your own comfortable space as you relax at Praia da Oura.

Now, you may be wondering… is Portugal warm in March? Is it possible to swim?

Unfortunately, the water temperature in Praia da Oura in March is usually too cold for many to swim in.

However, you can always compensate for the fun by enjoying the vibrant nightlife at bars and clubs in the nearby Strip area.

You might not be able to swim, but you’ll indeed be splashing in excitement!

    2. Explore Fisherman’s Beach

Do you love exploring multiple beaches in one trip like I do?

Then, visiting Fisherman’s Beach (Praia dos Pescadores) should also be your go-to thing in Albufeira in March.

This huge beach, with more than 200 meters of coastline, is literally in front of the Old Town of Albufeira, which is also one of the best places in Algarve.

So, you’ll get a charming view of Algarvian buildings on one side and enjoy nature’s mesmerizing ocean on the other.

If you’re fond of open-air concerts like me, drop by The Square behind the beach when the sun starts to set.

I enjoyed listening to local artists in that square and finished the night by ordering dinner at one of the restaurants.

    3. Watersports at Praia de São Rafael

By now, it’s evident that Albufeira is home to plenty of amazing beaches.

But if we’re talking about watersports, my go-to adrenaline rush during vacations, Praia de São Rafael is the best beach to be in.

Apart from having ideal conditions for surfing, Praia de São Rafael is also home to numerous watersports like kayaking, coasteering, stand-up paddling, and canyoning.

While you may try these sports on your own, I highly recommend joining watersports tours in Praia de São Rafael to make it super convenient, safe, and hassle-free to enjoy the thrill of the waves!

Just a heads up, though– you should be prepared to face the cold splashes in March!

    4. Visit the Old Town Square

If you’re still wondering what to do in Albufeira in March, visit the Old Town Square, the heart of the attraction-filled former fishing village, the Old Town.

This tree-shaded plaza offers local yet world-class cuisine, art, entertainment, and shops.

So, if you’re like me and love relaxing day trips sandwiched between other exciting activities, exploring Old Town Square makes the perfect addition to your Albufeira itinerary.

Of course, don’t forget to visit other attractions within the area as well, as there are many things to do in Albufeira old town.

Let its cobbled streets take your feet on a journey!

    5. Discover Albufeira Castle

Seeing centuries-old architecture, let alone castles, is always fascinating.

I truly enjoyed visiting the Paderne Castle of Albufeira, constructed as early as the 12th century.

Not only was my trip to this historical castle very enlightening about some bits of Algarvian history, but it was also a treat to my eyes as the castle overlooks a river and a colorful town.

You can easily reach the Paderne Castle by car, only 10km north of Albufeira.

Note, though, that it’s only occasionally open to visitors when special events or tours are held inside the castle.

  6. Explore the Church of Sant’Ana

View of historic white walls of Church of Sant'Ana in Albufeira, Portugal

Considering how religious most people in Portugal are, one of the best things to do in Algarve is to explore religious sites in the area, especially the Church of Sant’Ana.

Constructed in the 18th century, this beautiful, white-washed church’s architecture is truly a sight to behold.

You can see its grandeur throughout the entire building, from the intricately patterned ceiling to the woodcarvings on the main altar.

The church of Sant’Ana is conveniently located near Old Town Square, which I mentioned earlier.

I recommend eating before visiting this church, though, as there aren’t many restaurants nearby.

If you enjoy visiting the church of Sant’Ana, you might also want to check out the Faro Cathedral, which is one of my go-to locations to visit in Faro in March.

    7. Take a Stroll in Pau da Bandeira Viewpoint

The weather in the Algarve in March makes it perfect for taking long strolls.

That said, when it comes to relaxing walks, very few places can compare to the feeling of wandering in the Pau da Bandeira Viewpoint, which overlooks Fisherman’s Beach and the mesmerizing white buildings around the area.

You can easily reach this viewpoint by car as lots of parking is nearby.

Alternatively, you may take a taxi anywhere in Albufeira and mention “Pau da Bandeira Viewpoint,” as it’s a popular tourist drop-off point.

If you plan to take a long walk or a light jog, I recommend bringing a thin jacket or a cardigan in case it gets breezy.

    8. Day Trip to Ponta da Piedade

Looking for places to visit near Albufeira?

Take a day trip to Ponta da Piedade, or the Piety Point, renowned for its distinctive limestone coastline with mesmerizing cliffs.

I’ve seen my fair share of cliffs in my travels.

But my travel visual board is solid proof that Ponta da Piedade remains one of the locations I want to revisit most.

Most people visit this gem-like place by land, but I reached this spot by a small boat, which was honestly more mesmerizing despite costing me a bit more.

    9. Explore the Salgados Lagoon

For my fellow nature lovers wondering what’s on in Albufeira during March, the Salgados Lagoon is the best location to explore.

This lagoon is a haven for over 200 bird species, including flamingos, and exploring the area is incredibly easy thanks to the long boardwalks leading straight to the beach.

In most summer months, the Salgados Lagoon is packed, but in March, it is super peaceful.

I enjoyed a good two to three hours just soaking up the nature in this lagoon and then moved on to have a quick game of golf on the Salgados golf course, just behind the beach.

    10. Enjoy Seafood at Local Restaurants

Considering the slightly chilly weather in Albufeira in March, you should warm your body up by enjoying seafood at local Algarvian restaurants.

Thanks to the stunning beaches surrounding this city, you can enjoy fresh seafood every day throughout your stay.

I recommend eating at the restaurant called A Ruína if you want a fine dining experience. It offers an amazing beach view, and the menu varies depending on what freshly caught seafood is available that day.

Sol Restaurante was also a fantastic seafood spot if you love a good sip of boozy drinks as I do.

Their cocktails were amazing, and they had the cheapest beer in Olhos De Agua!

    11. Try Traditional Portuguese Dishes

What should I do in Portugal in March apart from trying all these active explorations? Entice your tastebuds by trying the delicious local cuisine!

Unlike many touristy places, traditional Portuguese dishes are untouched by foreign influences.

This means you can explore authentic dishes that represent the culture and palate of the locals in Albufeira.

The best traditional dish I tried during my stay was the seafood cataplana, a savory stew perfect for the Algarve weather in March.

Regarding desserts, I truly enjoyed the classic carob tart, a sweet treat featuring a very nutrient-dense local fruit.

    12. Explore Local Markets

If you want to stay healthy while still indulging in local cuisines, one of the best things to do in Albufeira in March is to source fresh produce from local markets.

Luckily, most vegetables in Portugal come into season during the colder months, which, of course, includes March.

I recommend whipping up healthy vegetable meals if you can cook in your accommodation.

Around this time of the year, oranges, kiwi, pears, and tangerines are also in season.

You’ll see them almost everywhere, from supermarkets to nearby stalls, so don’t forget to grab a few!

For me, the Mercado Municipal dos Caliços was the best local market for finding fresh produce, seafood, and other locally sourced goods.

Open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., this relatively small market was one of those cozy places where I could get a feel for how locals lived in the area.

    13. Experience Albufeira’s Nightlife

People dancing together in a club with a live DJ, one of top things to do in Albufeira in March

Sure, Albufeira in itself is an exciting place day in and day out.

But at night, this city takes on a whole different level of energy thanks to its endless bars, clubs, and other entertainment activities.

For example, the Old Town, which is Albufeira’s haven for souvenir shopping in the day, transforms into a huge lively stage for music performances with cocktail bars.

But if you crave crazy nights that slip into the sunrise, don’t forget to hit the Montechoro Strip, just a half-an-hour walk from the Old Town.

Even in the off-season, this place is packed, making it a perfect spot to meet new people and take unique pictures in front of classic mood-boosting neon signs.

Although not precisely in Albufeira, the district of Quarteira also proves to be a fantastic party spot.

It’s always teeming with partygoers and world-class DJs, so you can expect this area to fuel your nightlife cravings!

    14. Hiking Trails in the Algarve

Are you still looking for things to do in Albufeira in March? Make sure to add hiking trails to your list.

Hiking in Algarve is always a must for tourists visiting the region.

The area has beach coastlines, hilly paths, and cliffs, so even beginner hikers can truly enjoy the journey.

If you’re up for a challenge like me, the Albufeira to Portimão hike is the best hiking route. It takes at least 11 hours to complete and can be done over several days.

Since this route is along the coastline, you’ll always have a great view of the ocean as you walk, which is absolutely unmatched.

When I visited Albufeira in November, I tried this route again.

But honestly, March is the best time to visit Albufeira if you want to try the Albufeira to Portimão trail. The sun is never too harsh on the skin, and it doesn’t rain as much as in November.

If you prefer shorter hikes, the Castelejo trail (takes 1.5 hours) and the Praia da Amoreira trail (2 to 3 hours) will be among your best options.

Both still offer glimpses of scenic beaches and fantastic birdwatching experiences.

    15. Golfing in and Around Albufeira

Golfers can easily find stuff to do in Albufeira because the city and its surrounding areas have many popular golf courses.

I’ve already mentioned the Salgados golf course, which I loved because of its oceanic view.

But just a 30-minute drive from Albufeira, you’ll also discover the Dom Pedro Golf, a renowned pine-tree-surrounded golf course with a cozy atmosphere.

Its clubhouse is relatively small but incredibly welcoming.

Staying there felt like I was in my home away from home, and its 18-hole golf course was both challenging and fun!

Practical Tips

There are over a dozen exciting things to do in Albufeira in March.

But to get the most out of your experience, remember these tips before you land in the city!

Pack Weather-appropriate Clothing

What is Albufeira like in March in terms of weather?

The Portugal weather in March typically ranges from 12 to 19 degrees Celcius.

As you may know, these temperatures don’t always feel summer-like enough to wear classic summer clothes like shorts, tank tops, crop tops, and sandals

So, although there will be days when these outfits suit the daylight temperature, don’t forget to bring spring-appropriate apparel like cardigans, pants, and closed shoes for your trip.

Rent a Car

I know relying on public transportation is almost always the cheaper option when you’re traveling.

However, navigating the Algarve is much more convenient when renting a car from the Faro airport or nearby rental companies.

Although I was staying in Albufeira, for example, I could take multiple day trips from Lagos, Portugal, during my Algarve trip simply because it took less than an hour to drive from one city to another in Algarve.

I only spent 30€ to 50€ a day to rent a car in Portugal, so it’s not as expensive as most people think.

Stay in Different Accommodations

Still don’t know where to stay in Algarve? This might be an unconventional tip, but I highly recommend staying in the best accommodation in Albufeira

Sure, there are a series of best hotels in Albufeira. Still, I also enjoyed camping, glamping, and staying in villas in multiple spots in the Algarve region, which are undoubtedly highly worth experiencing!

My final thoughts on Albufeira in March

Even though it’s referred to as the “off-season” of the city, March genuinely stands as one of my favorite months to stay in Albufeira.

There are fewer crowds, but you can still meet new people.

Yes– the weather is a little chilly, but it’s perfect for outdoor adventures, especially hiking and parties.

I can talk about all the exciting things to do in Albufeira in March all day.

Still, even with just the 15 activities I mentioned above, you can easily visualize just how vibrant you can expect your Albufeira trip in March to be.

If you stay in Albufeira in March, you’ll save money thanks to the perks of “off-season” trips and have more intimate moments, better pictures (with fewer crowds), and, overall, an amazing journey!
