Hervas, Spain: a gem of Jewish heritage

If there would exist contests for intercultural architecture and history, Hervás and its Jewish quarter would certainly make it under the Top 5 in Spain!

This picturesque village, 2h30 min from Madrid and 1h from Salamanca, offers a perfect blend between Jewish and medieval architecture. It’s rich Jewish heritage will amaze you!

Only a few cities in Spain actually have a Jewish quarter so perfectly embedded in their historic center. In this sense, Hervás can perfectly compete with Granada, Toledo, or Seville.

When walking through the narrow streets of its Jewish quarter, named Calle Amistad Judeo Cristiana (“Jewish-Christian Friendship Street”) or Calle Sinagoga (“Synagogue Street”), you’ll immediately notice the abundance of symbols and references to Judaism: Stars of David on the walls, the supposed remains of its synagogue…

Besides its picturesque houses built in adobe, granite and chestnut wood, Hervás is self-declared home to Spain’s narrowest street! With its width of  50cm, Travesía del Morón definitely creates some claustrophobic sensations! You cannot leave Hervás without having tried its famous Pitarra wine!

You just need to follow the signs with Se vende vino de pitarra (“Pitarra Wine to Sell!”) to buy this “feet”-crafted wine in private houses of the Jewish quarter.

Day Trips from Hervas, Extremadura

When you are visiting Hervás, you should definitely include a visit of CandelarioGuijuelo and Plasencia!

All of them are located on the former Via de la Plata, the Silver Route, and have despite their small size an astonishing tourist offer. Candelario, an enjoyable one hour hike away from Béjar, is a swell village surrounded by a breathtaking mountain panorama. It is famous for its very peculiar architecture with batipuertas and several floors favoring the sausage and ham production.

Guijuelo is THE town of Iberic ham and cold meat production such like chorizolomolonganiza

The D.O., the Designation of Origin, certifies the superior quality of the Guijuelo ham. The village wouldn’t necessarily win a beauty contest, but the mouth-watering smell of ham diminishes the initial disappointment…

Plasencia would be worth an entire post on its own, but I hope the following headwords get you in the mood to visit this medieval town: 2 cathedrals! a unique Roman, Arab and Jewish heritage! an exemplary Plaza Mayor! …and a Parador located in an old convent which will indulge you with the delicious local gastronomy.

Who will dare to say that the region between Madrid and Salamanca is a touristic no man’s land?

Smallest street in Spain
