Duolingo vs Preply: What Actually Works When Learning a Language

I compared Duolingo vs Preply based on my experience.

Everything seemed perfect when I visited an eco-friendly resort just outside Dubai.

And I couldn’t wait to try out the phrases I’d picked up after months of Duolingo streaks.

Those were not the words I was expecting to hear. 

I could tell he was asking me something nice, but I didn’t understand a word he said.

I froze. 

Sadly, the small talk I was hoping for wouldn’t happen. I just replied, “Shukran” (Thank you), gave a smile, and that was it. 

Later on, I learned that he spoke local Arabic, while what I learned from the app was often used in books and formal conversations.

Why Arabic?

It all started at Expo 2020 Dubai. 

I stayed a bit longer to explore the UAE, found spectacular spots I never thought existed there, and got inspired to travel more across the region, including Jordan and Oman. 

Beyond landscapes, culinary secrets, and mosques, I discovered a culture with extraordinary hospitality and a beautiful faith.

As well as people I never expected to find. People who would eventually become part of my life.

That inspired me to be fully present and to make every travel experience more meaningful by making real connections.

My final thoughts
